Why Now?
The pork production community is under duress. Since the debacle of 1998 and continuing to today, pork producers have been lucky to financially break even while we continue to dwindle the number of pork producers in the country. This is occurring while total dollars spent on meat and poultry is at a record high. The money is decidedly NOT flowing into the pockets of those producing the product (charts attached). If we continue with the current trend, the fate of the pork producer is in jeopardy – something has to be done to address this situation.
What Is at Stake?
Quite simply, the fate of our industry. As the pork industry consolidates and mirrors the poultry sector, profits for those rearing and stewarding live production are being squeezed to nearly nothing. We cannot continue as we always have if we want to survive.
What Changes?
The path to progress is not complicated — but it does require unity and intention. Producers must stick together, trust one another, and most importantly, take back ownership of their data.
